Therapy
Soho Parenting offers a variety of counseling services for individuals, couples and families in all stages of a family's life to deal with issues such as depression and anxiety, adjusting to family life, marital stress, and peer and family relationships.
Individual Counseling
A deeper understanding of motivations, relationships and the impact of one's family of origin can bring about positive change for teenagers and adults. Meeting with a therapist allows for exploration and help with academic struggles, self-esteem, familial relations and parenting problems.
Couples Counseling
The transition to parenting requires a great deal of adjustment in your marriage. It can be a time of deeper love and commitment, and it can also usher in extreme marital stress and even crisis. Old childhood issues and conflicting family dynamics typically re-emerge at this time as you step into the role of co-parent with your spouse. With the help of a trained therapist, couples learn to decode the hidden meanings in their conflicts and to communicate in more productive ways.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is an innovative and highly effective therapy approach that can help in resolving and transforming old negative patterns of behavior to more flexible and productive ones. EMDR can be used in conjunction with long-term psychotherapy or as a short-term targeted problem solving technique. EMDR can be used to address issues such as anxiety, weight control, depression and anger management. It is particularly helpful in resolving symptoms related to past trauma. Many of our families who live in the immediate area of the World Trade Center have found EMDR very helpful in recovering after September 11th.
"EMDR made a huge difference in the way I felt about things from
my past. Even though I understood my personal history and its effects from
traditional talk therapy I still couldn't shake the anxious and depressed
feelings until I did a series of EMDR sessions. I was skeptical at first
but now I really recommend it."

Divorce and Separation Counseling
For families dealing with the separation and divorce process, it is critical to get guidance and support to make this hard time go as smoothly as possible for the children involved. Soho Parenting provides a number of options to families to help them navigate this difficult terrain. Sessions are problem-solving oriented with tangible results.
Custody and visitation questions
An objective outside party with knowledge of children's changing developmental needs can be a useful resource in deciding how best to spilt time between parents.
Periodic Family Counseling
Many families find it useful to use a parenting consultant as an ongoing resource for the family. Some even have it stipulated in their legal agreements in order to ensure a timely and civil resolution to problems that may arise in the future.
Supportive Counseling for Adults and/or Children
Issues of loss, anger and depression are often associated with divorce. Soho Parenting provides a forum for processing these reactions and guidance on moving forward and reshaping a new and more fulfilling life.
"My ex and I wanted to make good decisions about the kids without
getting all caught up in our stuff. Having Lisa help us with a game plan
has been great for us and the kids."
