OUR MODALITIES

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

The Internal Family Systems model believes that we all have a healthy, wise, compassionate Self, no matter our experience growing up. In addition, we have parts of our personalities that sometimes become extreme in response to cultural, familial, and interpersonal pressures. These parts are only aspects of our personalities, not who we are in total. For example, rather than labeling yourself as an “anxious person,” the IFS approach is that you have an “anxious part”—a small piece of the whole. In this therapy, the “anxious part” is met with attention and care, not disdain. The goal is to understand this part rather than eliminate it, building an internal alliance, rather than an adversarial relationship which promotes long lasting healing. We use IFS in our work with children, adults, and couples.

“IFS therapy has been the only thing that has really quieted that voice inside that has criticized me for as long as I can remember. It's crazy, but I've come to understand it was really trying to help me all those years!” — Rochelle, 24

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an innovative and highly effective therapeutic modality. EMDR resolves painful memories from difficult life events or traumatic experiences. It can transform unhealthy patterns of behavior to more flexible and productive ones. EMDR can be used in conjunction with long-term psychotherapy or as a short-term targeted problem solving technique. Learn more about EMDR at emdria.org.
